Using verbs with parts of the body

We practice using verbs with parts of the body and articles of clothing.

The indirect object pronouns in Spanish:
me, te, le, nos, os, les
Reflexive pronouns in Spanish:
The same as above, except "le(s)" is replaced by "se"

(Yo) Me toco la nariz.
(I touch my nose.)

yo = subject
me = indirect object
la nariz = direct object

When the person performing the action is also the recipient of the action, the verb is reflexive.

Te toco la nariz.
(I touch your nose.)

la = definite article

A definite article is used in front of the body part and article of clothing.

1) LAVAR (to wash)

Los niños se lavan las manos.
(The children wash their hands.)

Les lavamos las manos.
(We wash their hands.)

Nos lavamos la cara.
(We wash our faces.)

Les lavo la cara.
(I wash their faces)

* In Spanish, when each person only possesses one of a particular body part or article of clothing, we express that noun as singular.

2) QUITAR - to take off/remove

Se quitan la camisa.
(They take off their shirts.)

Le voy a quitar la bata.
(I am going to remove your robe. - usted)

3) QUEBRAR - to break

Te quebraste la pierna.
(You broke your leg.)

Me quebró el brazo.
(He broke my arm.)

4) TORCER - to wist

Me tuerzo el tobillo.
(I twist my ankle.)

Me tuerces el brazo.
(You twist my arm.)

Te torciste el tobillo.
(You twisted your ankle.)

Le torcí el brazo.
(I twisted his arm.)

5) QUEMAR - to burn

Me quemé la lengua .
(I burnt my tongue.)

¿Te quemó el brazo?
(Did she burn your arm?

6) LASTIMAR - to hurt

Te lastimaste la espalda.
(You hurt your back.)

Me lastimó el dedo.
(She hurt my finger.)

7) PONER - to put on

Nos ponemos el abrigo.
(We put on our coats.)

Esta mañana les pusiste el abrigo.
(You put on their coats this morning.)

8) ABROCHAR - to fasten

Me abrocho el cinturón de seguridad.
(I buckle my seat belt.)

Le abrocho el cinturón de seguridad.
(I buckle your seat belt. - usted)

9) DESABROCHAR - to unfasten

Nos desabrochamos el cinturón de seguridad.
(We unfasten our seat belts.)

Le desabrocha el cinturón de seguridad.
(She unfastens his seat belts.)

10) AMARRAR - to tie up

¿Te puedes amarrar los zapatos?
(Can you tie your shoes?)

Mi mamá me amarra los zapatos.
(My mom ties my shoes.)

11) DESAMARRAR - to untie

¿Te puedes desamarrar los zapatos?
(Can you untie your shoes.)

Mi papá me desamarra los zapatos.
(My father unties my shoes.)

12) CEPILLAR - to brush

Se cepillan los dientes todos los días.
(They brush their teeth every day.)

¿Le cepillas los dientes todos los días?
(Do you brush his teeth every day.)

13) PEINAR - to comb

Nos peinamos el pelo.
(We comb our hair.)

Nos peina el pelo.
(He combs our hair.)

14) RASCAR - to scratch

Se rascan la cabeza por los piojos.
(They scratch their heads because of the lice.)

Le rascaste la espalda.
(You scratched his back.)

15) RASPAR - to scrape

Te raspaste la rodilla.
(You scraped your knee.)

¿Te raspé la rodilla?
(Did I scrape your knee?)
